What are some common threats?
- Spam refers to unsolicited email sent with the purpose of selling or marketing. While annoying spammers do not typically try to obtain sensitive information.
- Phishing emails are emails that do try to get sensitive information such as bank account numbers, website credentials, etc.
- Spoofing is a method in which spam or phishing emails appear to be from senders that a user may know such as a co-worker, vendor or customer. The purpose is to trick a user into responding quickly and revealing sensitive information.
Some examples may include:
- Emails from “Microsoft” claiming that your account is about to be shut down or your mailbox is full. The sender will then claim to provide free storage or ask you to authenticate your account by clicking on a link.
- Emails that appear to be from co-workers, customers or vendors asking you to wire money quickly or pay an invoice.
- Look for misspelled words in the sender address. For example, a message from Microsoft might be spelled “Microsft”. Note the missing ‘o’. Misspelled words are common in phishing emails because they are easy to miss when someone is scanning incoming email.
- Identify spoofing by hovering your mouse over the ‘Display Name’ of a suspicious email while in Outlook so that the actual sending email address pops up. An email might appear to be from a known sender but if you hover over the name the sending email address might be something completely different.
